One of the many charitable activities that our Rotary Club supports is the Dictionary Project (www.dictionaryproject.org). Founded in 1995 by Mary French of Charleston, SC, its primary focus is to promote literacy to children in third-grade as they transition from learning how to read to identify and use information. Over the course of the program, nearly 15 million third-grade students have received dictionaries, including about 2.5 million dictionaries donated in 2009.
Last week, the Vernon Rotary Club donated 248 dictionaries to 3rd graders at the Rolling Hills and Cedar Mountain schools in Vernon. The Vernon Rotary Club has been providing dictionaries for many years and it's always interesting when we meet young people who say they still have the dictionary that was given to them all those many years ago. And if you're wondering why use a dictionary with today's spell checker and Internet, that should be the reason to use a dictionary in the first place!
Other charitable organizations that the Vernon Rotary Club has recently supported include Winslow Therapeutic Riding Unlimited (www.winslow.org) and the Wheelchair Sports Federation (www.wheelchairsportsfederation.org). Please visit their respective websites for more information.
