We had a very successful inaugural Fall Golf Outing at the Berkshire Valley Golf Course on Monday, October 27.  We had an enthusiastic crowd that enjoyed the beautiful fall weather for a fun outing.  Afterwards, we enjoyed an excellent buffet dinner at Portofino's in Oak Ridge.  Thanks to the Fall Golf Committee for their hard work - Sam Nails, Walter Fay, Louis Cattaneo, and Jeff Beers.

We welcomed Kyung Pak and Yon Han from the Korean Spirit & Culture Promotion Project to our meeting.  Ms. Pak and Ms. Han offered a program that talked about the history of Korea, with an emphasis on the origin of the Korean alphabet and the advances in technology, both in communications and medicine that Korea has enjoyed.  It was interesting for us to hear that 100% of Koreans have access to wireless Internet services.  They entertained questions from the Club and we all went home a little smarter about a different part of the world.

We are working on the Dictionary project.  Just some quick numbers.  Since this project started, 24 million Dictionaries have been distributed throughout the school systems in the United States alone. 12 million of them have been distributed through Rotary Clubs. Over 90,000 will be distributed in New Jersey alone this year by Rotary Clubs. We are a part of those numbers.

People ask, "Why are Dictionaries so important?"  According to a study, in order to be successful and fluent in language, the average person should have a vocabulary of around 20,000 words.  Sounds like a lot, but it also make sense that you not only need to be able to spell a word, you should also know what it means.  Hence, Dictionaries!  Thanks to all of the Club members who helped raise the funds to purchase these Dictionaries and all those who are working on getting these important books to the third graders in our school system.  You are the best!

The 1st annual Fall Golf Outing is in full preparation mode.  The outing will be at the Berkshire Valley Golf Club on Monday, October 27, 2014.  The cost is $125 per golfer and includes a round of golf and dinner at Portofino's in Oak Ridge, NJ.

This evening we had Chris Brancato from the Department of Persons with Disabilities join us to discuss their recent fundraising success.  Their golf fundraiser grossed $10,000 in 2010 and increased to $80,000 gross in 2013-2014.  Chris provided a systematic overview of their formulas for success.  This was an insightful presentation with great lessons for any organization looking to raise money through not only golf outings but also other types of fundraisers.

Hope everyone is having a good summer.  We certainly can't complain about the weather - talk about "unseasonably cool!"  I'm hearing that this winter will be another tough one.

We're working on some exciting activities for the Fall.  A suggestion was made for a Fall golf outing which is being planned out and we've got a Blood Drive on August 23rd.  Other activities include a Pass It Along Bike Ride, District Golf Outing, and the North NJ Veteran's Golf Outing.  More to come....stay tuned....

We welcomed John Hungerford from the LaPlata Rotary Club of Maryland as a visiting Rotarian this evening.  John provided an overview of his home Club and their annual Lobsterfest fundraiser.  We shared our experience with our annual Golf Outing.  It is always good to speak with other Rotarians to get a view of their Clubs' experiences.  Click on the link for John's Club's website:  http://www.laplatarotaryclub.com/

We also welcomed our speaker, Jay Thienel, who gave a talk on a Low-Power FM station that he is looking to start up in Vernon.  This station, for which he has a provisional license, would just cover the Vernon area and be able to provide educational and community oriented programming of a non-commercial nature.  The model used is the National Public Radio (NPR) model where underwriting is permitted.  Click on the link for more information:  http://vernonfm.org/

This is a great idea for Vernon and presents an exciting opportunity for high school students and others to learn about and experience the operation of a media outlet.  It provides a way for residents and visitors to stay abreast of what's going on in our schools and local community, potentially in "real-time."  Imagine being able to listen to a Vernon Vikings football game while watching your other child's basketball game.

We've invited Jay to come back to give us an update on how things are progressing.  In the meantime, visit the website and send the link to others to increase awareness of this in the community.
